Songs They Want to Sing – Hans Helsen
Songs They Want to Sing: Composing for Youth Choirs
How do we create choral music that truly engages young singers? How can composers challenge and inspire them to grow musically and expressively? In this session, we will explore fresh and exciting repertoire for children’s and youth choirs, focusing on music that is both accessible and artistically enriching.
Through practical examples, we will dive into contemporary choral works that go beyond simple melodies and standard harmonies. A special focus will be placed on Flemish composers, who have a strong tradition of writing high-quality vocal music for young choirs. Their works, including some of my own, highlight the power of choral music to inspire, connect, and empower young voices, encouraging them to explore their full musical potential.
Join this session for an inspiring journey through new and rewarding repertoire—whether you are a singer, conductor, music student, or composer, you’ll discover fresh ideas and practical insights to bring into your own musical practice!
